Welcome 2014!

A big BKI welcome to the New Year!  We’re excited to be back at work on some brilliant projects, starting 2014 with a bang.

Some of our work took on a new life over the course of the last year, with the over-sized Jim Beam cans (Jim Beam Bourbon for The Works) moving from their cooler at Bondi Icebergs out to bottle shops all around the country – perhaps you’ve already seen one at your local?

These iconic cans are truly living it up after being salvaged from the pool – send us a photo if you happen to find one. Cheers!

We took great care in relocating the magnificent marble Fountain we sculpted for artist Hany Armanious from the MCA Rooftop to Heidi Sculpture Garden. The sculpture is now on long term loan to the Heide Museum of Modern Art.

Our team created the fun-filled Lipton Sparkling Iced Tea ride, fitted out a traveling VW Kombi Cafe, created the amazing staging centrepiece which provided the backdrop for the SEVEN West Media launch and the glowing Vodaphone 4G brand device which lit up the Sydney Harbour foreshore.

Bring on your best briefs and give us a challenge, we look forward to imagineering the future with you!

2013 Big Kahuna Imagineering Scholarship Recipient — Hugh O’Connor

We’re thrilled to introduce the 2013 NIDA recipient of the Big Kahuna Imagineering Scholarship — Hugh O’Connor — who was chosen for displaying considerable novelty in his material science.

Currently in his third and final year of Design at a National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA), Hugh is deep into the production of Louis Norwra’s play Cosi, directed by David Berthold — a semi-autobiographical play depicting a young theatre director tackling the monumental task of directing Mozart’s Così fan tutte… with a cast from a mental asylum.

With themes of love, madness, art and politics, Hugh has created a totally immersive set in which the audiences experiences the play in order to convey those themes in the fullest and most genuine way.

“I believe that the basis of all storytelling is emotional connection, a shared understanding of what it means to feel sadness and joy, fear and awe, pain and ecstasy,” Hugh said.  “I don’t believe that any two projects can use the same approach to achieve an empathetic connection.”

Whether it’s a fully immersive set, complete with roof, walls and floor or an empty stage with only a single actor and the imagination of the audience, Hugh’s interest lies in pushing his exploration of these varied techniques and materials to create stories without pretense which convey a small (sometimes large) part of what it means to be human.

Hugh credits passion for creating work that engages and moves audiences to his years as an actor and director for Lismore-based, youth theatre company Theatre-Theatre between 1998 and 2008.

Today, Hugh’s production credits include…

And, as a “big fan” of both Wilson and Waits, Hugh is also excited about his involvement in the end of year production for the Tom Waits/ Robert Wilson musical adaptation of  Woyzeck directed by Imara Savage, which he is co-designing with classmate Elizabeth Gadsby (recipient of the 2012 Big Kahuna Imagineering Scholarship).

Receiving the Big Kahuna Imagineering Scholarship has allowed Hugh to dedicate his full engagement and concentration to his work at NIDA.  As the amount of time and energy required for creative projects is immense, and without this scholarship, Hugh’s final year “would have been difficult indeed.”

As Hannah McCann, NIDA Development Officer, said:  “The support of bursary provides relief from financial pressures for many NIDA students and allows recipients to concentrate fully on their studies, maximising the opportunities presented to them while they are at NIDA.”

Upon completing his studies at the end of the year Hugh is planning on working in theatre design (both set and costume) and exploring the world of film and television production design. In 2014, he is planning to travel to Berlin to undertake work in the German theatre industry with the aim of securing a position as an intern/assistant with a designer/theatre company.

Certainly a budding creative to watch!  Grab your tickets for Cosi showing this June and check out Hugh’s work for yourself!

Here are a few more examples of productions Hugh has worked on…

People-Powered Cup Spinner

Brief: A people-powered cup spinner

Honda fell in love with an experiential idea for the Sydney Festival conceived by their digital agency, DT — who described the concept as: “Immersive volumetric persistence of vision people powered cup spinner,” now known as the HondaTrope (and affectionately known at Big Kahuna as “the cup spinner”).

Brought together by brand experience agency PLAY Communication, the HondaTrope is a cutting-edge experience using the latest digital and engineering technology which must be ridden to be fully understood.

The HondaTrope ConceptThe concept centres on a bespoke spinning cup, custom engineered from the ground up (cue: Big Kahuna Imagineering).  Surrounded by 24 vertical LED light poles, festival patrons sit inside the cup and begin to spin around. Once they reach an optimal speed, the surrounding lights slowly reveal a hidden garden seen only by those inside the HondaTrope.

Positioned in the heart of the Honda Festival Garden in Hyde Park, the HondaTrope is based on the concept of anthropotropism, the principle that technologies work better when they respect the nature of the human body and mind.  With padded seating for three, the cup is designed to enable festival patrons to share the joyful experience.

Honda Australia Director and General Manager of Sales and Marketing, Mr. Stephen Collins said the installation is an exciting addition to the Honda Festival Garden.  “The HondaTrope is an innovative and creative installation that pushes the boundaries of engineering and technology and really demonstrates the power of clever thinking. The partnership with Honda and the Sydney Festival has resulted in creating a world-first experience that reflects what the festival is all about – creativity, art, and collaboration – but most of all, having fun.”

The HondaTrope was a highlight of the Honda Festival Garden during the 2013 Sydney Festival.

Once the elements were welded and ready for assembly, the two-part steel base went together first and the ballast put in place before the steel-framed cup was affixed.

Working with Honda’s digital agency DT, and Play Communication, it's one of the latest projects to exit the Big Kahuna workshop... an experiential campaign that invites you to step into a giant spinning cup and experience a secret garden that you can only see while spinning at a certain speed on the ride.
