Quick Sprint

In our Memory Lane Marathon, here’s a quick sprint…

RIPE FOR THE NICKING

If we’ve created something that is so cool some Joe off the street wants it bad enough to risk potential gaol time, we know we’ve done our job.

NRL Star Willie Mason’s Leg Mould

Big Kahuna Imagineering created a casting of Mason’s leg as well as imprints of his hands that fans at the 2008 NRL Fan Day could use to see how their own anatomy measures up against this rugby superstar. The NRL loved our work so much that they let some eager fan run home with it.

ksubi’s “Sign of the Times” Sculpture

Big Kahuna created this 8-foot tall hand sculpture complete with severed fingers and gushing blood for premium jean label ksubi a few years ago. A replica of the fountain BKI created was installed at the label’s flagship store in Melbourne but somehow some cheeky thief broke in and stole the large sculpture in the middle of the night. Not an easy task!

Lap 2 of Memory Lane

We couldn’t believe we let our 10th birthday slip by without so much as nod, so we made sure to take some time to reflect on our birthday this year. HAPPY YEAR ELEVEN, EVERYONE! Here we go for lap 2 of Memory Lane!

BKI’s custom-designed water tower standing tall at the 2007 Big Day Out Festival

BKI’s Duracell Water Tower, 2005

Duracell Water Tower

This 6-metre tall beauty debuted at the 2005 Big Day Out Music Festival. With its ingenious portable design, the branded tower with 10 water stations kept festival-goers hydrated throughout the day-long event in the scorching summer heat. Perfectly positioned near the main arena and standing high above the masses, thousands would have had “Duracell” on their thirsty lips that day.

Besides hitting the demographic nail square on the head, the water tower was a functional dream because Big Kahuna designed it so that the huge unit could fold neatly down to sit on the back of a small truck for transportation. The client loved it so much, we re-branded it two years later for Bacardi Express.

The fact that this 6m-tall water tower could fold down to fit on the back of a small truck made it very functional.

“9.99”

From mammoth to miniature, Big Kahuna Imagineering developed several miniature camera devices that were truly mini-groundbreakers for the 2009 stop-motion animated feature film “9.99”. One of our such devices was an SLR digital still live video split that allowed the camera crew to see the movements of the stop-motion animation characters in real time as they were positioning before the next frame. This tiny little device averted the need for over-sized frame stores of digital, single-shot photos, making the filming process much smoother and economical for this adventurous, modern-day, Australian animation epic.

Pedal to the Metal

Client: Volkswagen

Agency: PLAY Communication

Project: Re-design and fabricate VW Pod

The newly-redesigned VW Pod made its debut at Belmore Park, Syd., just in time for the Chinese New Year Markets
Big Kahuna sketch for VW Pod

Volkswagen wanted the original concept of the VW Pod – a pedal-powered photo booth – re-designed for long-term, secure, outdoor use. With features like high-security lockout shutters, durable vinyl seating and sunlights, Big Kahuna gave our client exactly what they wanted.

The newly-redesigned VW Pod made its debut at the 2011 Chinese New Year Markets in Belmore Park, Syd., before heading to Darling Harbour the following weekend. The pod is meant to be circulating around the country throughout the next year. So, keep an eye out!

Travel-Friendly Promotional Barrels

Client: Bundaberg

Agency: oOh! Media

Brief: Create realistic replicas of Bundaberg’s iconic barrels for a national promotional campaign

Big Kahuna created 7 lightweight, transportable barrels to go on the road with Bundaberg

The barrel is the iconic symbol of Bundaberg Brewed Drinks. So much so, they built their famous tourist centre in the shape of a traditional barrel in 2005.

So, naturally, when Bundaberg took their promotional campaign on the road last year, they wanted to take their distinctive barrels with them. But faced with lugging bulky, wooden kegs all over Australia and New Zealand, Bundaberg knew the real thing would be far too cumbersome so oOh Media! came to BKI for a functional alternative on Bundaberg’s behalf.

The Bundaberg promotional barrels needed to be lightweight, transportable and as realistic as possible. First, Big Kahuna designed the barrel into three sections, nested within one of the parts for very compact transportation. Then to tick the ‘realistic’ and ‘lightweight’ boxes, BKI chose to reproduce the barrels in fibreglass from fibreglass moulds. The result was seven Bundaberg-branded barrels for oOh Media! that traveled around a healthy chunk of Australia and across ‘The Ditch’ equipping Bundaberg with high-fidelity, experiential marketing hardware that powerfully reinforces the brand.
